RESUMO

Sitophilus oryzae is a kind of stored grain pest. This is controlled by using natural pesticides, which are more reliable, cost-effective, biodegradable, and eco-friendly than synthetic pesticides. Several plants show different insecticidal activities against various pests on their different parts (leaves, seeds, etc.). In this study, methanolic extracts of Lantana camara (leaves), Carica papaya (seeds), Ricinus communis (leaves), Calotropis gigantea (flowers), and Gliciridia sepium (leaves) were used to identify the best insecticidal activity against the rice weevil by doing mortality tests for one week with four replications under laboratory conditions. Gliciridia sepium leaves showed the highest insecticidal activity (100 ± 0) after seven days, and its extract was fractionated by using column chromatography and yielded 12 fractions. A contact bioassay of each fraction was performed, and fraction-11 showed the highest insecticidal activity against Sitophilus oryzae with a 100 % mortality after four days. Fraction-11 was analyzed by using GC-MS and FT-IR. Results revealed that the major constituent identified in fraction-11 was 4-C-methyl-myo-inositol. Therefore, 4-C-methyl-myo-inositol acts as a natural insecticide against rice weevils.

RESUMO

Natural products such as terpenoidal compounds have been extremely tested against pathogenic bacteria. Researches are frequently carried out to find out new natural, semisynthetic and synthetic antibacterial agents due to problems of resistance. Thymoquinone derivative was obtained in our previous study and the current research is a continuation. The antibacterial activity of a monoterpenoid; thymoquinone derivative, 5-isopropyl-2-methyloxepine-1-one (1) has been evaluated for the first time by following the Agar cup bioassay method employed. The bacterial strains used in this study were Escherichia coli and Bacillus subtilis. Compound 1 showed moderate activity against Gram-positive organism; B. subtilis and good activity against Gram-negative species; E. coli with zones of inhibition (ZOI) 10.0 ± 0.2 mm and 11.0 ± 0.2 mm against E. coli and B. subtilis, respectively, and in comparison with antibiotic, imipenem. The zones of inhibition were calculated as the mean of the triplicate. The antibacterial activity of thymoquinone derivative 1 could be explained by the presence of unsaturated lactone.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the association of coffee consumption rate with serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D, non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels, and total cholesterol to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio in females with vitamin D deficiency. METHODS: This retrospective cross-sectional study was carried out by studying the records of 270 Jordanian females aged 18-65 years with varying degrees of vitamin D deficiency. Following completion of the questionnaire regarding their anthropometric characteristics and coffee consumption rate during the preceding 3 months, the participants were required to provide blood samples for analysis to measure 25-hydroxyvitamin D and lipid profile levels including non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and total cholesterol to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio. RESULTS: The current study demonstrated that coffee consumption rate and vitamin D deficiency were significantly positively connected with the total cholesterol to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (p = .003) in women with vitamin D deficiency. In addition, vitamin D deficiency alone correlated positively with non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels and the total cholesterol to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (p = .010) and (p = .002), respectively. CONCLUSION: Higher coffee consumption rate among women with vitamin D deficiency significantly elevated total cholesterol to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio that may increase woman's risk of hyperlipidemia.

RESUMO

Microbial transformation of thymoquinone (5-isopropyl-2-methyl-cyclohexa-2,5-diene-1,4-dione) (1) by suspended cell-cultures of the plant pathogenic fungus Aspergillus niger resulted in the production of three metabolites. These metabolites were identified as 5-isopropyl-2-methyloxepin-1-one (2), 3-hydroxy-5-isopropyl-2-methylcyclohexa-2,5-diene-1,4-dione (3), and 5-isopropyl-2-methylbenzene-1,4-diol (4) by different spectroscopic methods. Metabolite 2 was found to be a new compound. Compound 4 showed a potent antioxidant activity.

RESUMO

Microbial transformation of clerodane lactone (1) by a plant pathogen fungus, Rhizopus stolonifer, resulted in the production of metabolites 3 and 4. While incubation of clerodane methyl ester (2) by R. stolonifer yielded metabolites 5-8. The structures of the transformed products were determined by the spectroscopic techniques and compounds 4, 7 and 8 were found. The antibacterial activity of clerodane diterpenoids 1 and 2 and their metabolites 3-8 were also studied. The metabolites 3-7 showed moderate activities against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms. While metabolite 8 showed a moderate activity against Gram-positive organisms and a good activity against Gram-negative organisms.

RESUMO

Structural transformation of the steroidal lactone, oxandrolone (1), by suspended-cell cultures of the plant pathogen fungus Rhizopus stolonifer, resulted in the production of three new metabolites. These metabolites were identified as 11alpha-hydroxyoxandrolone (2), 6alpha-hydroxyoxandrolone (3) and 9alpha-hydroxyoxandrolone (4), by different spectroscopic methods and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis for metabolite 2. Compounds 1 and 3 showed a significant beta-glucuronidase inhibitory activity.

RESUMO

The microbial transformation of testosterone by the fungi Rhizopus stolonifer and Fusarium lini has been investigated for the first time. The bioconversion reactions observed from R. stolonifer included oxidation of a 17beta-hydroxyl group, a hydroxylation at equatorial 11alpha position, reduction of the double bond at C-4 with oxidation of the methylene at C-6 to the corresponding keto group, and lactonisation of ring D; the latter is the first report of this reaction by a Rhizopus species. Fusarium lini promoted 1-dehydrogenation of the steroid, which has been rarely observed in fungi cultures. The other routes of biotransformations included oxidation of the 17beta-hydroxyl group and the hydroxylation at 11alpha position. These reactions are not common for Fusarium species.
